Mind & Body Artistic Inspiration The words Mind & Body always conjure up physical or mental exercise or an indulgent spa treatment. But isn’t looking at incredible art another way to switch off and escape from your thoughts and worries. This month I am going to The Courtauld gallery to see Monet and London – Views of the Thames. There was a plan for Cezanne to show these paintings in London in 1905 but the plan fell through so this is the first time they have been brought together 120 years after their inaugural exhibition in Paris. One way to cheer up a dark day would be to book one of the later evening time slots at The Courtauld and eat beforehand at one of the First Table restaurants. Remember you receive 50% off your food bill. Don’t leave it long to buy tickets for the exhibition as the later evening slots are starting to get booked up. Due to the exhibition’s popularity, the Courtauld will be open until 9pm on the following dates: 25th October, 22nd November, 13th December and 10th January 2025. Click here to find out more. To Read You don’t have to have a dream Tim Minchin’s advice for the incrementally ambitious. I heard Tim speak about the release of this, his first non-fiction book, at a breakfast event recently. In the book, he shares his unique thoughts and advice on life and he summarises his musings in nine lessons of wisdom. The book is not telling you to set goals or how to smash your career. It’s a breath of fresh air and I found myself nodding in agreement with Tim’s philosophy on life. This is a book that I want to buy for everyone I know. It is beautifully illustrated by Andrew Rae. On the back is not the book blurb but a wonderful message from Tim which gives you the essence of the book… Life will sometimes seem long and tough. And you will sometimes be happy and sometimes sad. And then you’ll be old. And then you’ll be dead. There is only one sensible thing to do with this empty existence, and that is: fill it. Click here to buy the book. To Listen This Cultural Life on Radio 4 with John Wilson On the subject of filling life and every moment that you are awake. I wonder if anyone else suffers from podcast fatigue? Listening to the same high profile people doing the rounds promoting their latest book or show. The interviews can be dull because the presenters are sycophantic in their style. Interviews that are meant to be a revealing or enlightening conversation can end up being underwhelming or formulaic. I stumbled across the presenter John Wilson on BBC Sounds earlier this year whilst listening to his series This Cultural Life which goes out on Radio 4 every Thursday and Saturday. John is one of the best presenters I have listened to in recent years. He’s not touchy feely in his approach and asks really insightful questions. He’s not afraid to push his interviewees if he thinks he has not been given a proper answer. His famous guests seems to respond well to his style and this is a series that doesn’t make you feel you have heard it all before. John and his producer Edwina Pitman do their research and it shows. I have just listened to the Marina Abramović episode and there are many more guests including Antony Gormley, Andrew Scott, Lucy Prebble and Donna Leon. Great to listen to on a walk or in the car but too good for a noisy train or tube journey. Click here to listen. To Investigate Saga Magazine I never thought I would be writing about the virtues of Saga magazine but my mother is always giving me clippings from the magazines. Aside from Which, I don’t know another magazine that tackles the rights of the consumer so eloquently and gives readers lots of brilliant advice. I used to be a career complainer when I worked on BBC’s Watchdog. I love giving feedback to this day (lucky recipients!) but companies are slow to respond to consumer’s complaints. It’s ironic that they continually send emails requesting we review their services (positively) yet when we need to contact companies to complain about poor service, it’s virtually impossible to find a contact to write to. It’s normally a bot or an automated helpline that sends you back to the bot. I thought this Saga article was very good about the art of complaining properly so worth bookmarking it although let’s hope you never need it! Click here to read more. To Entertain Colin from Accounts Trying to decide what to watch on tv/streamers can be overwhelming so it’s a relief when someone says you must watch this series. My sister-in-law kept talking about Colin from Accounts and it’s now back for its’ second series. It hasn’t disappointed, it’s quirky, likeable and funny as are the two lead characters who are a real life couple too. Click here to watch. Nobody Wants This The other series that I have really enjoyed (despite its’ terrible title) is Nobody Wants This. I don’t want to spoil it by giving too much away. Don’t google it, just press play. It’s the equivalent of soaking in a warm bubble bath. Both series are an antidote to world news and to heavier subject matter programmes that can stay in your head (and not always in a positive way.) And finally, both of these comedy series episodes are only 30 minutes long. Heaven! Click here to watch. I hope you have a lovely rest of the month planned and as Tim says that you get to ‘Fill it!’. I’m looking forward to writing the next prescription to get you through the winter. If you would like to invite a friend to receive the monthly prescription then please click the box below.
