They are particularly uplifting when the days are short and the nights are long. Having flowers in winter time can make such a difference. A gift to others or why not for you? To Read  I Have Some Questions For YOU Rebecca Makkai I bought this book as a gift but ended up keeping it as the bookshop where I bought it recommended it so highly, as did the author Jennifer Egan. I am not usually a fan of the murder mystery/thriller genre but Makkai writes very well and although the book is a slow burn, it kept me gripped until the end. Click here to buy the book. To Listen  Finally A Show About Women That Isn’t A Thinly Veiled Aspirational Nightmare This has to be the most convoluted title of a podcast series but it’s refreshingly different or you could argue obscure. This episode is about a sound bath practitioner in a strip mall in Los Angeles. Other episodes include Jean Ketcham is an octogenarian who is baring it all. There’s also Karis Dolman who is 15 years old and a water ski instructor. It’s a wonderfully random and refreshingly different to the celebrity led podcast series that dominate the charts. To Investigate  Olio I am a big admirer of Tessa Clarke and Saasha Celestial-One who co founded Olio which is a food sharing app dedicated to reducing food waste by connecting neighbours and local businesses to share surplus food. The idea for Olio emerged in 2015 when Clarke was moving house and couldn’t bear to throw away edible food. This moment highlighted the waste issues embedded in everyday life, inspiring Tessa to co-found Olio with Saasha. Since its’ inception, Olio has saved millions of portions of food from being wasted. Do check it out if you haven’t yet by going to olio app.com It’s such an inspired idea and you can add a photo of your item, set a pick up location either on your doorstep, in a public location, or hidden in a safe place. You never need throw away unwanted food again! And Olio has expanded to include users being able to give away other items like school uniform, toys and other useful household items. To Entertain  James Blunt: One Brit Wonder This Netflix documentary follows James on his 2022 European comeback tour and explores the influences which have shaped James, including his life as a solider. James served in the British army and was deployed to Kosovo in 1999 as part of Nato’s peacekeeping force. Finding himself propelled into life as a global superstar, those around James talk about how his former life shaped the way he approached his new career. I totally fell for his parents who seemed to take his showbiz life with a huge pinch of salt and a large dose of laughter. Blunt is continually vilified by the press and as a result the public for being ‘posh’ and lacking in talent. He’s amazingly resilient and despite being advised by his manager not to respond to the nay sayers. He tries a new approach of fighting the tide of criticism he receives with his own style of humour. EG Member: Jemima  About the member Jemima is a multidisciplinary artist and curator, who studied at the Chelsea School of Art and the Royal College of Art. A very impressive and impactful part of Jemima’s career was when she curated at NOW Gallery initiating a programme of design, art and fashion exhibitions. She commissioned the likes of Charles Jeffrey, Camille Walala and Molly Goddard to create solo installations for the gallery. This programme brought over 200,000 visitors to Greenwich Peninsula over 10 years with exhibitions, events and public sculptures. Jemima works as an art consultant, and as an artist working with Twist Art and she hosts a Sunday night Instagram Live called Creative Boost. I have always admired Jemima’s work and @megaphonewoman is beautiful art created by Jemima exploring teenagers, motherhood, grief, happiness. Jemima describes herself as ‘an artist and bipolar mother, speaking out about life and lessons through my alter ego.’  Jemima’s Recommendations To Entertain “I love Camden Art Centre, Whitechapel Gallery and South London Gallery. All have amazing free exhibitions on. All worth visiting. Camden Art Centre has an exhibition by the French artist Nicole L. It is a must visit for its’ sofa sized limbs and its ‘penetables’ which are these canvases she made that you could inhabit – hard to describe and moody. As a serious feminist and activist, her work looks at the human body and makes space for us to be included in her work. It’s a political commentary on gender equality, this exhibition is fun, playful and surprising.” “Plus the café at Camden Art Centre is a delight, good coffee and cake, and the shop has excellent, unusual presents!”Click here to see more about Nicole L’s exhibition. A new series of Jemima’s photographs – Recovery – will be shown in March 2025 at Pearson Lloyd Studio, examining being made redundant in a witty, uncomfortable way.
